Simple classic fable style story of PUPPY's quest to better itself. Children love the characters, so beauifully illustrated by the author. Humor, excitment and warm tender moments. This story has the traditional feel of a children's bedtime read-aloud, but is also specifically aimed at the advanced readers in 4th grade as well. The actual inspiration to write the story, the author tells us, was to lure in reluctant middle school readers with the primary grade style of colorful graphics, but to challenge them to read the substantial text content (as compared to the few words per page of actual primary grade readers they were choosing, he observed). What's funny as a Neil Simon Broadway smash hit, more controversial than an Oprah special, and fresher than the frost on a Minnesota morning? It's "Doc" Williamson's fresh, new comedy Minyan by Proxy. The story is about two well meaning members of the community who are trying to help the widow arrange for a traditional prayer ceremony (a "kaddish") for her recently deceased husband. Unfortunately the husband was a schmuck. He had long neglected his beautiful wife and compounding the difficulty of assembling the minimum of 10 people for the service is the fact that no one liked him, dead or alive. Add to that a recent rash of fatalities around town that leave no local rabbi available to particpate, and the challenge is considerable. Mitzi, the widow, besides being beautiful, if no longer young, is just naturally sexy, and therefore is a significant distraction to senior citizens Max and Lewis who are trying to make the arrangements. Lewis is more than a little smitten by Mitzi, but it appears that there may have been some prior hanky-panky between the georgeous widow and Max. You can almost smell the chicken soup in the dialog, and it will certainly warm your heart to feel the laughter and the blooming of not-so-young love, in this witty, fast-paced comedy.
